THE RED SERIES

2023

The Red Series, part of a continued study into our spiritual and physical connection with natural forms, is a collection of pieces which depict extreme close ups of flowers emerging from deep, near black backgrounds. The colours of the petals and leaves almost disappear into the darkness that surrounds them. The flowers appear more defined and prominent from different angles as the light reflects on the surface to highlight the shapes and angles of the forms, suggesting organic movement. The pieces are built up with layers of oil glazes using just a few colours, creating a smoothness in the surface texture, and the close-cropped view gives power and strength to a subject often considered soft and delicate.

The Red Series reference traditional botanical illustrations as they highlight the drastic changes on the natural landscape brought about by climate change and the human impact.

Painted from photos and sketches of flowers and foliage found on walks through East London during Covid lockdowns - from community planters, neighbourhood gardens, open spaces, roadsides and windowsills - during times of discussions about how the world coming to a stop was allowing nature to heal, something we now know would not have lasting effect on the climate crisis.
