CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF UK PRIDE

THE ROYAL MINT’S OFFICIAL COMMEMORATIVE 50PENCE

As the LGBTQ+ community celebrates 50 years since the first Pride March in London, Dom had the honour of designing The Royal Mint’s Official commemorative 50p coin. The history of the Pride movement holds a great significance to me and I felt very honoured to be the artist to depict it through this coin. This historic piece marks the first time the LGBTQ+ community has been celebrated on a UK coin.
”The history of the Pride movement holds a great significance to me and I felt very honoured to be the artist to depict it through this coin.
It was important to me to really highlight the ethos and drive behind Pride as a movement. These days it is so often dismissed as just a "parade" and a "celebration" when in fact it has always been much more than that; Pride is Protest and it's important we don't forget that, especially in the current climate. My design was inspired by images of the original Pride marches - the hand-made placards and protest signs calling out the demands of the brave LGBTQ+ people who were taking to the streets to fight for their rights.
Holding the coin in my hand for the first time just a week ago, seeing the design and the message of Protest and Pride on the coin itself was an incredibly moving moment, and I hope it has the same impact for other queer people out there. Growing up under Section 28 here in the UK, where any public encouragement or promotion of queerness was banned, I never got to see this sort of positive LGBTQ+ representation. A small element of visibility can be very powerful.
As Queer people, we are continuously fighting for our rights to exist freely and with the respect we deserve. This is a significant milestone in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and equality. Pride means so much to me and to so many people across the UK and beyond, and I believe it’s important that we take time to celebrate the progress made over the last 50 years, and those who fought for it, whilst continuing the work for our community.
I feel proud to have worked on something that celebrates and commemorates such an historic moment for the LGBTQ+ community so publicly, and hopefully encourages more protest, more visibility, and more progress.”

The Collectors Edition Commemorative coins are available via the Royal Mint official website, where you can also learn more about their financial and social pledges to support the LGBTQ+ community.

SHEHERTHEYTHEM

THE COMMUNITY BUILDING SOCIAL INITIATIVE FOR QUEER WOMEN, NONBINARY, TRANS, INTERSEX AND GENDER NONCONFORMING INDIVIDUALS IN EAST LONDON AND BEYOND

After a prolonged, Covid-enforced hiatus, SheHerTheyThem relaunched in May 2022with a truly empowering event. Dom founded the initiative in 2018 in reaction to the lack of safe and inclusive spaces for the minoritised queers in our community to reclaim their power and platforms, to celebrate and collaborate without having to fight to be seen and heard.
Cis men inherently dominate all spaces in society, and this is true of LGBTQ+ spaces too. SheHerTheyThem is about decentering cis male energy, claiming space for Queer Women, Trans, Intersex, Non Binary and GNC people to not only exist, but thrive and find joy, without having to make themselves small or self-censor for their own protection.

Minoritised queer voices need space to share resources, establish friendships, and uplift the people and organisations that give back to our community. We need space to express creatively and politically; to address and resolve the issues that specifically impact us.

”Our mission is to decentre cis male energy from our queer community and build a platform for the marginalised and minoritised LGBTQ+ voices in a space that supports and encourages collaboration and connection. Our entry code is simple - NO TERFS, NO SWERFS and NO CIS MEN allowed in the space. Cis Men are welcome to support our community by donating to our causes, educating themselves on why we need events such as this, and respectfully allowing us our space.”

As a non-profit, every donation goes to support this initiative. It's only possible thanks to the generosity of our community and allies. If you want to help, please visit the official page for ways to show support.

SUPPORTING BREAST CANCER NOW

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to support Breast Cancer Now, Dom created a run of limited edition t-shirts, with 100% of profits going to the charity.

TATTOOS & EMPOWERMENT

Dominique’s essay Tattoos: A Statement of Empowerment for Radical Women has been published by Hundred+Heroines as part of their series exploring Body Art. The essay, which discusses the roles tattoos have played in the fight for gender equality over the last 150 years, is an insight into Dominique’s upcoming book, Tattoos: Art and Empowerment in the Fight for Gender Equality, highlighting many of the key points, and demonstrating the evolution of the often overlooked sociopolitical power of Modern Western Tattooing.
